“Controlling the breath & thus calming the nerves, is a prerequisite to controlling the mind and the body.” Swami Rama
yoga-barbados-pranayama
The flow of breath is essential to life. It is the process of supplying energy to the body, for without oxygen, the body cannot convert food into usable energy.

A thorough understanding of the breath provides a powerful tool for expanding one’s awareness of the various dimensions of the body and mind as well as for therapeutic modality.

The importance of breath can be better appreciated by observing some of the mind’s behaviour. • It is true that breath influences both body & mind. the rhythm & rate of breath would reflect not only one’s physical condition, but it would also help to create it. If you are anxious or stressed chances are your breathing is hollow and short, if you concentrate on trying to even your inhalations and exhalations and ideally lengthen your exhalations you will notice your mind getting calmer and any tension in your body easing.

There are practical exercises and techniques for systematically working with the breath and controlling the flow of prana is described in detail. It helps to expand one’s breath awareness. It helps the one to observe the way in which one uses his breath, various unconscious breathing habits are identified and replaced with more beneficial ones.
